Our industrial RS-232 to RS-422 and RS-485 converters are ideally suited for the industrial automation market and other “control panel” applications. Some offer triple isolation and hardened Class 1 Division 2 certification for use in hazardous locations and temperature extremes.

    Most industrial computer systems come with standard RS-232 serial ports. Though widely accepted, RS-232 has limited transmission speed, range, and networking capabilities. The RS-422 and RS-485 standards overcome these limitations by using differential voltage lines for data and control signals. The ADAM-4520/4522 converter lets you take advantage of RS-422 and RS-485 on systems originally equipped with RS-232. It transparently converts RS-232 signals into isolated RS-422 or RS-485 signals. You do not need to change your PC's hardware or your software. The ADAM-4520 lets you easily build an industrial grade, long distance communication system with standard PC hardware.     The ADAM-4521 is an intelligent RS-422/485 to RS-232 converter specifically designed to connect RS-422/485 devices to an RS-232 network. RS-232 is the most common transmission standard. Although widely available on most computer systems, measurement equipment, PLCs, and industrial devices, its transmission speed, communication distance, and especially networking capability are limited due to unbalanced transmission. The ADAM-4521 addressable converter solves this problem and lets you easily build up an RS-485 network with your RS-232 devices by assigning each one an address for easier communication.

It converts two channels (TX and RX) in each direction (bi-directional) from TTL to RS-232. Model 232LPTTL33 converts RS-232 to 3.3VDC TTL/CMOS compatible levels. Two channels convert from RS-232 to TTL/CMOS signals and two channels convert from TTL/CMOS signals to RS-232. The converter supports TD, RD, RTS, and CTS. DB9S female connector on the RS-232 side.   • BB-422LCON


    Mode 422LCON, non-isolated RS-232 to RS-422 converter, converts unbalanced RS-232 signals to balanced RS-422 signals. The RS-422 Standard uses a balanced voltage digital interface to allow communications of 90K bits per second on cable lengths of 1200 meters (4000 ft). Ten receivers can be connected to any one driver for use in multi-drop systems.   The RS-232 port is a DB25 male connector with pins 2 (TD input) and 3 (RD output) supported.   Protective Ground (pin 1) and Signal Ground (pin 7) are also connected. The RS-422 port is a DB25 female connector with Send Data outputs on pins 2 and 14, and Receive Data inputs on pins 5 and 17.  Protective Ground (pin 1) and Signal Ground (pin 7) are connected through to the RS-232 connector. LEDs indicate Transmit Data and Receive Data. An external power supply is required (not included, sold separately).


  • BB-422LP25R


    Model 422LP25R, RS-232 to RS-422 converter, converts unbalanced RS-232 signals to balanced RS-422 signals. The power used for this converter is derived from the Transmit Data line (pin 2) and the Handshake Control Lines (pins 4, 5, 6, 8, and 20). The converter can derive power from these lines when they are in the Positive or Negative voltage state. This permits the converter to be used in applications without regard to software control of the handshake lines. If no handshake lines are available and all power must be derived from the Transmit Data line, the converter can drive limited cable lengths. A guide for this condition would be to drive only several hundred feet of transmission line and not to terminate the transmission line with a resistor of less than 1000 Ohms. When more handshake lines are available, longer lengths of cable can be driven. This converter has been tested at 115.2k baud with 1220 meters (4000 feet) of cable.

    Model 422LP9R is a port-powered two-channel RS-232 to RS-422 converter. It converts TD and RD RS-232 lines to balanced RS-422 signals. The unit is powered from the RS-232 handshake lines DTR and RTS. One of these handshake lines must be asserted (high) in order to power the unit.

    Model 422TTL converts RS-422 or EIA-530 signals to 5V TTL at data rates up to 115.2 kbps. Two channels are used to convert RS-422 to TTL and two channels are used to convert TTL to RS-422. A DB25 male connector is used on the TTL side and a DB25 female connector is used on the RS-422/EIA-530 side. The converter supports RD, TD, RTS, and CTS. Pin 7 is signal ground for both connectors. The converter supports baud rates up to 115.2 kbps. Open pads are provided for each line. If desired, you can change the pin connectors for any of the 4 channels. When converting a second RS-422 channel, use the corresponding RTS A and RTS B pins (refer to the Quick Start Guide). The converter inverts the TTL signal. Refer to the specifications table to determine polarity. An external 12 VDC power supply is required (not included).

    Three Versatile Powering Options Model 485BAT3 features power versatility, making it perfect for field testing solutions. It can be powered in three ways: batteries, port powered, or external power supply (not included, sold separately).  Use the battery power option with a low power RS-232 port (found on many laptops) or no handshake lines or when it is inconvenient to use a power supply. Model 485BAT3 will draw as much power as possible from the RS-232 port and get any additional current necessary from the batteries. If you have a full power-port and all your handshake lines, turn off the battery switch. This allows you to run full port-powering and saves the batteries for emergencies.     Model 9PFLST allows any two pieces of RS-232 asynchronous serial equipment to communicate full-duplex over two multi-mode fibers.     Model SCP211-DFTB3 serial converter is compact and rugged, designed and tested to meet heavy industrial EMC standards. The RS-232 signal is connected through a female DB9 connector. The RS-422/485 (2-wire and 4-wire) signal is connected through a removable terminal block, making wiring easy. Power is connected through a two-position, removable terminal block. A 10-30VDC external power source is required (not included, sold separately). Bit-wise enabled circuitry automatically detects the character time-out eliminating the need to set DIP switches for the baud rate. Model SCP211-DFTB3 is non-isolated and made for less demanding temperature extremes.
